Nichols School Orchestra 2011-2012
Objective: Learn aesthetic literacy by learning and performing a variety of classical music that represents the rich musical heritage of the symphony orchestra. Learn self-discipline through consistent practice. (Playing a musical instrument is considered to be one of the highest cognitive levels of learning).
Rehearsals: The orchestra rehearses during X-Period every other day
All Students are expected to attend all rehearsals. They must have their instrument and their music at every class. Music should be prepared in daily practice at home or at school. Students may use practice rooms at school during free periods.
Lesson Lab: Each member of the ensemble will be assigned to a lesson lab once a schedule rotation (every 7 school days) during a free period for the purpose of having more individualized instruction in the playing of his/her orchestra music. Even if a student has a private teacher outside of Nichols they are expected to attend their lesson lab.
Grading: Grading is based on the level that each student plays and how much progress and effort they put into their work both in rehearsal and in their own practice. Therefore, a freshman’s playing is not necessarily compared to a senior’s playing. Each student has the responsibility to make sure that they are making a positive contribution to the ensemble. A daily rehearsal 5 point system will also be used to ensure your child is a responsible young musician. Each student will receive a point for being on time, having their music, having their instrument, having a pencil to mark parts and being attentive during the rehearsal.
Concerts: The Nichols School Orchestra performs in two major concerts during the school year. It is imperative that all members of the orchestra perform at both concerts as they are the culmination of an entire semester’s work.
