Course Name: Freshman Survey of the Arts: Theater

Course Objectives:
Using a “hands on” approach to folktales from around the world, students will study personal and public expression through the spoken word. We will explore the historical and social significance of live performance, and investigate the argument that theatre has no cultural or geographical barriers.
Objectives for Students:
To learn about people who are different from us.
To increase creativity and problem solving skills.
To develop group cooperation skills.
To experience rehearsal and performance of a text.
To increase awareness of physical and vocal self.
Topics Covered in Course:
Basic Theatre Games, Theatre Space, Blocking, Theatre Practitioners, Origins of Theatre, Folklore from around the world.
Methods of Assessment: Students will perform texts individually and as a part of a group, and will participate in a number of games and exercises that teach basic acting principles. Folk Tale Project (30%), Collaboration within Group Performances (30%), Commitment to Games and Exercises (30%), quizzes (10%) are the primary means of assessment.
Materials Needed: A 3 ring binder w/pockets, or a 3 ring binder and folder.
