The following course outlines have been designed to provide a variety of learning experiences involving the visual arts.  Areas of study in all grades will include art production, art history, art criticism, and aesthetics.
Grade 5
Initially, the students will be introduced to the elements of art and the principles of design.  Subsequently, they will be expected to participate in a series of lessons progressively developed to enhance and integrate several areas of their academic studies.  More specifically, the collective series of lessons have been designed to develop a greater appreciation for the history and pluralism of styles of art.  As historical references and styles are discussed, projects will be assigned and individual improvisation will be greatly encouraged.
Grade 6
Initially, the students will be introduced to basic concepts of spatial design. Following several class discussions, they will be expected to participate in a series of working exercises that will encourage new spatial relationships and perceptual affinities.  As they explore differing ways of structuring space, experiments in printmaking and drawing will encourage unique and artful book structures that will contain their art work.
Grade 7
Overall, the students will explore a wide variety of learning experiences in art class.  Areas of exploration will include drawing and poetry, maskmaking, and architecture from around the world.  All projects will require the students to make preparatory designs on paper, innovative art productions, and thoughtful articulations that describe their learning experiences.  Much emphasis will be placed on resourceful and constructive thinking using mixed media and multiple disciplines of art.
Grade 8
This course will focus on the art of self-expression through drawing and painting.  The students will be given several opportunities to explore basic concepts of proportion, drawing within a grid system, acrylic painting, and color theory.  In addition, the students will be expected to participate in several class discussions concerning color relationships and painting styles throughout the ages.
